According to our Newington Connecticut personal trainer, an inactive lifestyle is one where there is a lot of sitting or lying down, and one with not much movement. Also, called a sedentary lifestyle, you may sometimes hear this referred to as being a perpetual “couch potato,” or one with very little to no exercise.
Our increasingly more technological society is not helping matters. The more we find easy ways to do things from a work desk, the more sedentary we become. Video games become our source of entertainment.
We asked our Personal Trainer in Connecticut, How does inactivity affect our bodies?
He said, “In a host of ways. Firstly, you will burn fewer calories if you don’t expend energy from activity. This will definitely increase the likelihood of gaining unwanted fat.”
He also said that our bones can get weaker, and lose mineral content.
Our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer advised that our muscles could atrophy, because we are not using them as much.
Inactivity breeds an unhealthy immune system. You may find yourself getting sick more often.
Additionally, your metabolism will be negatively affected, leading to issues with your body breaking down fats and sugars.
Some of the other issues with inactivity and lack of exercise poor blood circulation, more inflammation in the body, and may even lead to hormonal imbalances.
So, what does this mean for us as far as health risks are concerned? All of these negative effects on our body, due to inactivity, can lead to increased risk of:
- Obesity (and all the issues associated with obesity)
- Stroke
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure and High (bad) cholesterol
- Some cancers
- Metabolic resistance
- Osteoporosis or bone loss
- Depression
- And a host of other ailments.
Studies show, said our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer, that people with an active lifestyle live longer!
What can you do to become a more active person?
Plenty, and it doesn’t mean you have to go from sedentary to Olympic athlete over night either.
Start slowly and with the basics, says our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainer.
Stand instead of sit.
Walk instead of stand.
Jog instead of walk.
Run instead of jog.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Park farther away in the parking lot. Go for a walk on your lunch break.
Then as you become slightly more active, turn up the activity a notch.
Make time a few times a week to do some type of exercise: stretch, walk, jog, play tennis, swim.
Eventually, add strength training and different types of cardio, like group training to your routine. Our Newington Connecticut Personal Trainers are great for this. They can show you the proper way to become active.
We all know that “an object in motion tends to stay in motion.” It’s the same with people. If you become active, and feel healthy and well, you will want to stay active. And that will lead to a longer, more enjoyable life, all because you became a CT Personal Training Client! Oh, this goes for the elderly whom exercise is recommended as well!
